Wildflowers

Wildflowers on the Notsuke Peninsula begin to bloom around May and reach their peak from June to July. In early summer, the meadows turn yellow with Chinese senna (Sendaihagi) and daylilies (Ezosukashiyuri), followed by the deep pink of rugosa roses (Hamanasu) and the purple of Japanese irises (Nohanashobu) along the wetlands. Other species, such as black lilies (Kuroyuri) and orange lilies (Ezosukashiyuri), continue the seasonal display, and in some areas, early autumn flowers can be seen until around September.

The best viewing areas are the walking trail from the Notsuke Nature Center to Todowara, and the wildflower garden near the Notsuke Cape Lighthouse. Along the road from the base of the peninsula to the Nature Center, flowers change with the seasons, making it ideal for a scenic drive. To help preserve the fragile ecosystem, please stay on designated paths and refrain from entering or picking plants in protected areas.

From late summer to autumn, the tidal flats turn red with glasswort (Akkeshisou), and the grasslands shimmer with silver pampas grass swaying in the wind. Around sunset, the backlit grasses create an ethereal glow — a reminder of the changing seasons. From spring through autumn, these ever-changing floral landscapes are one of the peninsula’s greatest attractions.
