EXPERIENCES
Todowara
Todowara is a fantastical landscape that was created when the Sakhalin fir forest that once spread across the Notsuke Peninsula withered due to salt damage and subsidence. Exposed to the sea breeze and seawater, the trees withered and died, and now it is a "forest of dead trees" with only the white, weathered trunks remaining, and is also known as the "vanishing landscape."
From the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center, you can walk along a promenade that is about 1.7 km one way and takes about 30 minutes. At the end of the path there is a wooden pier where you can enjoy the scenery up close.
In autumn, the marshland is dyed red by the spread of coral grass, and in winter, Notsuke Bay freezes over, transforming the area into a pure white otherworld. At dusk, the silhouettes of the dead trees are illuminated by the setting sun, creating a sight so beautiful that you will lose track of time.
