EXPERIENCES

Cycling

Cycling on the Notsuke Peninsula is an activity that lets you take in the unique scenery of this remarkable place while following the long, narrow sand spit between the sea and the sky. Stretching in a gentle arc for about 26 km, the peninsula offers a surprising variety of landscapes, from tidal flats and grasslands to marshes and forests, so the scenery changes as you ride. From early summer through summer, wildflowers bloom along the road, creating the beautiful route often known as the “Flower Road.”

There is more than one way to enjoy the ride. Instead of simply cycling out and back, you can take the Betsukai sightseeing boat from Odaito Fishing Port toward Todowara, enjoy the views of Notsuke Bay from the water, and then return by bike. The boat also offers one-way access to the Todowara pier, making it possible to combine a bay cruise with cycling on land.

Along the way, you can head toward iconic sights such as Todowara and Narawara while enjoying the peninsula’s nature at your own pace. You also have a good chance of spotting wildlife such as Ezo deer and red foxes. Please note that the Todowara area is accessed via a wooden boardwalk from the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center, so you cannot continue riding all the way there. From the Nature Center onward, you will need to get off your bike and push it.

The peninsula is often windy, and the temperature can feel quite different depending on the weather, so it is a good idea to bring a windproof jacket. Also note that the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center is the only place along the route where you can get water, food, or use the restroom, so please plan ahead.
